Get your entries in for the Corn Market photo competition

The Corn Market photo competition, launched as part of the 'Quest at the Corn Market' is not just a fun competition with a mystery prize – it will also help to build Walcot Street Trust's historical archive of the Corn Market.

To enter the competition, email your photo to jo.bridger@cornmarket.org.uk or drop off a hard copy at the YMCA. Please include your name and address so that we can return any originals (and send you your prize if you are the lucky winner!). The closing date of this competition is 30th June and photos don't have to be historical ones so get snapping!

Jo Bridger or Walcot Street Trust commented, “The Trust has gathered a lot of archive material about the Corn Market's history and we would love to supplement this with photographs – both old and new – so it’s a great way for local people to get involved and contribute to the Corn Market's documentary history. Of course there is also the chance of winning a prize provided by the country folk who helped out at 'The Quest'. We at Walcot Street Trust really don't know what that prize is so we'll be as excited to find out as the winner!”

The winner will be announced on 6th July so get those entries in – you never know, you may win the mystery prize!

The Corn Market is an architecturally important building that occupies a key site in Walcot Street which if sympathetically restored for public use could form a gateway into Walcot Street from the rest of the city.

More information and a selection of the entries so far, can be found at www.cornmarket.org.uk.

Walcot Street Trust receives resounding support for the restoration of the Corn Market

Following the runaway success of 'Quest at the Corn Market', Walcot Street Trust have today released the results of the public consultation part of the event. During the first week of March, almost 300 people attended the event and were given an interactive tour of the Corn Market in small groups. They then had the opportunity to discover the building's past - and its possible future – at the Corn Market exhibition.

Over 150 people completed a questionnaire concerning their views about the future of the Corn Market and the Walcot Street Area – the majority response on the future of the building was extremely positive. 98% wanted to see the Corn Market restored for public use and 88% of those who live or work in the Walcot Street area want to see it used as an Arts Centre.

Jo Bridger or Walcot Street Trust commented, “We are delighted by the level of local participation in the 'Quest at the Corn Market' event and are bolstered by the positive response of those who attended. Most people would like to see the Corn Market restored and that is just what Walcot Street Trust plans to do. The feedback we have received from those who live or work in the area and even those who visit it from time to time, will be really valuable for our next step which is writing a business case for the project plan.”
