Introduction

From WST

Walcot Street Trust (WST) was formed in 2004 and is a registered charity (No. 1108228) and a company limited by guarantee (No. 5192521). WST was formed to preserve the historical and architectural heritage in and around Walcot Street for the benefit of the people of Bath and the wider community, and also to promote education by providing facilities for arts and crafts activities.

The Trust’s first project is to preserve Bath Corn Market and to restore the building so that it can be used for the benefit of the community.

The Corn Market forms an important part of Walcot Street’s architectural heritage. In addition to its original use as a corn market, the building has had a number of other functions during its lifetime: woodwork and metalwork classes for local schools in the 1930s, the manufacture of Mosquito aircraft parts during the war, a home for the Percy Boys Club and, most recently, as the Cornmarket Family Centre. In 2001 fear of structural problems led to its closure, since when it has remained empty.
